  • Located in Washington Park, the International Rose Test Garden holds more than 10,000 individual rose bushes representing over 610 different varieties, in bloom from late May through October.

  • The garden traces its origins to World War I, when hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland for safekeeping, fearing the plants would be destroyed in the bombings of Europe. What began as an act of preservation became one of the most celebrated public gardens in the country.

• Latourell Falls (4.9 ⭐️)

  • Located in Guy W. Talbot State Park along the Historic Columbia River Highway, just 30 miles east of Portland.

  • Latourell Falls is one of the most dramatically situated waterfalls in the entire Columbia River Gorge. The main falls drop 249 feet in a single, nearly vertical plunge over a basalt cliff face streaked with yellow lichen, framing the water in a way that looks almost deliberately composed.

  • The short trail from the parking area to the base of the falls is less than half a mile and virtually flat, making it one of the most accessible waterfall viewpoints in Oregon.

  • Latourell Falls runs year-round, fed by the consistent rainfall of the Pacific Northwest, and is at its most powerful in late winter and early spring. In summer the mist at the base offers welcome relief on a warm Columbia Gorge afternoon.

  • Located about 22 miles east of Portland off I-84. The views from the beach toward Crown Point and the Gorge walls are quietly spectacular.

  • The park draws swimmers, picnickers, windsurfers, and families looking for a beach day within easy reach of the city. The Columbia River runs wide and relatively calm here, and on a hot Portland summer afternoon the water is exactly where everyone wants to be.

  • Rooster Rock is also home to one of Oregon’s designated clothing-optional beaches, a secluded stretch on the western end of the park that has been part of the landscape since the 1970s.

• Cannon Beach / Haystack Rock

  • Tucked along the northern Oregon coast about 80 miles west of Portland. Cannon Beach is a small, unhurried town of galleries, bookshops, and seafood restaurants that has managed to grow in reputation without losing its quiet character.

  • At the center of it all stands Haystack Rock, a 235-foot sea stack rising directly from the shoreline, one of the largest intertidal monoliths in the world. It is impossible to look away from and changes character completely with the light, the tide, and the season. At low tide the rocks around its base reveal tide pools filled with sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs.

It's loud, fragrant, and entirely itself.

Maui, the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, is formed by the union of two volcanoes at a narrow waist of land. The older West Maui Mountains are located in the northwest, while the younger and significantly larger Haleakalā, known as the House of the Sun, rises majestically to an elevation of 10,023 feet in the east.

In the isthmus that separates these mountains gives the island its distinctive nickname, the Valley Isle. The mountains play a crucial role in shaping the island’s weather patterns. The windward northeast side is characterized by lush rainforests, meandering streams, and cascading waterfalls. In contrast, the drier western and southern coasts are home to the majority of Maui’s beaches and resorts. Kahului, situated on the central plain, serves as the primary gateway to the island. On the west shore, Lahaina holds historical significance as the former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Once the passengers stepped outside of the Kahului Airport (OGG), they were welcomed by an outdoor electric tram that transported the passengers between the main terminal building and the Rental Consolidated Center (RCC). As part of the expansion and modernization plan, the half-mile tram line was opened in 2019. Each car carries the name of an island in Maui County, and the bodies are styled after the island’s plantation past.

  • Guests of the Kaanapali Ocean Inn share the same entrance, hotel lobby, fitness center, and other amenities as the Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows.

  • Each room offers either an ocean or resort view balcony, with private beach access just steps away from the building.

  • Duckine was a restaurant opened in October 2022. It replaced a family-run Chinese restaurant that had occupied the space before. The chef and owner, Alvin Savella, created a duck-centric menu that featured dim sum and local flavors.

  • The name “Duckine” is a play on “da kine,” the Hawaiian term for “all-purpose.” The duck bao and duck-fat fried rice were the star dishes of the menu.

  • Unfortunately, Duckine was one of the Front Street businesses that were lost in the fire weeks later.

• Waikiki Brewing Company, Lahaina (4.3 ⭐️ 🚺 $$$) Bar - Permanently closed

  • 900 Front St, Lahaina, HI 96761

  • Waikiki Brewing Company was a brewery located on Front Street overlooking the water. It was the company’s third location in Hawaii and the first located outside of Oʻahu. This location was established in 2015.

  • The medal-winning beers perfectly complemented the breathtaking sunset that the address had promised. Tragically, this location was also destroyed by the devastating Lahaina fire in 2023. In response to this tragedy, the company generously raised funds to support the staff who had lost their jobs.

Activities:

• Haleakalā National Park (4.9 ⭐️)

  • Haleakalā Highway (HI-378), Kula, HI 96790

  • Haleakalā means “House of the Sun”, which holds a significant place in Hawaiian mythology. According to the legend, the demigod Māui embarked on a daring quest to capture the sun from this summit. By doing so, Māui successfully slowed its journey across the sky, thereby extending the length of the day.

  • Although Hawaii is known for its year-round warm climate, the temperature at the summit of Haleakalā (10,023 feet above sea level) can plummet to just above freezing before sunrise. This altitude-induced phenomenon creates a unique microclimate, supporting the diverse ecological system that thrives on the mountain.

  • To watch the breathtaking sunrise at the summit, the National Park Service required a reservation for any vehicle to enter the park between 3AM to 7AM. These reservations are limited and are only valid for the day reserved.

  • Visitors without a valid reservation will be turned away.

• Hāna Highway

  • The Hāna Highway runs 64.4 miles from Kahului to Hāna. It crosses 59 bridges, 46 of them a single lane wide, and bends through roughly 620 curves.

  • Many of the bridges date to the early twentieth century. The full road to Hāna opened in 1926. Traffic moves at about twenty-five miles an hour through near-continuous rainforest. Hāna sits at the far end, a small town that keeps a slower rhythm than the resort coast.

• Koʻolau Forest Reserve

  • For much of its length the highway threads the Koʻolau Forest Reserve, set aside in 1905 on the windward slopes of Haleakalā. The reserve covers roughly 31,000 acres of wet native forest and feeds the East Maui watershed.

  • The green wall along the upland side of the road is this reserve. Near the eighth mile marker a hand-cut, stone-block section of the Koʻolau Ditch carries water from the rainy interior toward the dry central plains, a remnant of the irrigation system that once served the sugar fields.

• Kaumahina State Wayside Park

  • Kaumahina State Wayside Park comes up just past the twelfth mile marker. The name translates as rising moon. The 7.8-acre stop is one of the few along the road with restrooms. Its overlook earns the stop on its own, taking in the Keʻanae Peninsula and the black-sand crescent of Honomanū Bay on the coast below.

• Hana Lava Tube (4.5 ⭐️)

  • Past the thirty-first mile marker on the Hana Highway, a turn onto Ulaʻino Road leads to the Hāna Lava Tube, also known as Kaʻeleku Caverns. This tube was formed approximately a thousand years ago when molten rock drained away beneath a hardened crust. It is the largest on Maui and, by common reckoning, the eighteenth largest in the world.

  • A self-guided walk takes approximately forty minutes and covers roughly a third of a mile. Admission includes a flashlight, which is necessary for navigating the dimly lit interior.

• Dragon’s Teeth Trail | Makaluapuna Point

  • Dragon’s Teeth Access Trail, Lahaina, HI 96761

  • Located in Kapalua, on the property of The Ritz-Carlton, Maui.

  • The trail and attraction are open to the public, but parking is limited.

• Downtown Lāhainā

  • Front Street, Lāhainā, HI 96761

  • Lāhainā was the historic seat of the islands. King Kamehameha made it the capital of his kingdom early in the nineteenth century. The capital remained there until the seat relocated to Honolulu in 1845.

  • Front Street ran along the water, lined with shops, monkeypod trees, and the great banyan at its center. The banyan was planted on April 24, 1873, as a gift commemorating the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first Protestant mission. It has since grown into sixteen major trunks and became the largest banyan in the United States.

  • The town had celebrated the tree’s 150th anniversary in April 2023, three months prior to this visit. Nearby stood the Old Lahaina Courthouse, built in 1858, and the Pioneer Inn, established in 1901. The latter had long been the oldest continuously operating hotel in Hawaii.

  • On August 8, 2023, a devastating fire ravaged Lāhainā, consuming nearly everything in its path. The blaze destroyed most of Lāhainā, killed 102 people, and charred the iconic banyan tree that had shaded the waterfront for a century and a half. Despite the devastation, arborists have embarked on a remarkable journey to revive the tree, nurturing it back towards health.

• Air Travels

  • Hawaii enforce a strong agricultural regulations to protect its unique ecosystems and agricultural industry from invasive pests and diseases, while also providing legal protections and zoning rules for farmers.

  • While inter-island travels has limited inspections, all air travel to and from US Mainland & Foreign Countries are subject to USDA Agriculture Inspections and secondary screening at the terminal.

• Kahului Airport (OGG)

  • Like many airports located on an island, Kahului Airport (OGG) embraced the open-air concept from the check-in counters to the breezeway in front of the boarding areas.

• Road to Hana

  • All major car rental companies explicitly prohibit driving on the unpaved "Back Road to Hana" (Piilani/Hwy 31 past Kipahulu).

  • The road past Kipahulu features unpaved, washboard-dirt roads, blind one-lane corners, and drop-offs. If you get a flat tire or need a tow, the towing companies will charge upwards of $1,500 to $4,000.

This weekend moved between two distinct geographies. San Juan held the historical weight, its fortifications and colonial grid largely unchanged by the calendar. In contrast, El Yunque bore the unmistakable signs of time’s passage, its canopy still in recovery in some areas nearly a decade after Hurricane Maria. Together the two halves of the trip framed a useful question: what does a place look like the second time, once the novelty of discovery has worn off and only the place itself remains?

  • Dining at La Burguesía goes well beyond the conventional American-style burger. The kitchen builds its menu around Caribbean flavor, applied with a light hand rather than as a gimmick.

  • The range runs from appetizers to entrées to sides, and the seafood stands out across all three. The Tuna Tartare arrives with avocado spread, red onions, chives, and ponzu, served alongside malanga chips. The Peach Crostini offers a lighter counterpoint, built from peach marmalade, goat cheese, jamón serrano, and a balsamic glaze.

  • The burgers anchor the entrées. Each is made with freshly ground beef and stacked with toppings that balance the traditional against the more inventive: applewood bacon and avocado alongside truffle goat cheese, jalapeños, garlic aioli, and chipotle mayo.

• El Yunque National Forrest (4.7 ⭐️)

  • The drive from San Juan to the El Yunque National Forrest takes roughly 45 minutes on Route 3.

  • El Yunque sits in the Sierra de Luquillo mountains of northeastern Puerto Rico is the only tropical rainforest within the United States National Forest system. The terrain ranges from dense lowland canopy to cloud forest at higher elevations, supporting species found nowhere else on the island.

Early Struggles for Recognition

For much of American history, same-sex relationships were not legally recognized and were often criminalized, which created an atmosphere of official hostility rather than protection. The modern LGBTQ+ rights movement gained momentum after the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, which galvanized activists to challenge discriminatory laws and demand equal treatment.

Years before Stonewall, Philadelphia was already a center of early LGBTQ+ protest. Beginning in 1965, Barbara Gittings, often called the “Mother of the Gay Rights Movement,” helped organize the Annual Reminder demonstrations at Independence Hall each Fourth of July, calling attention to the civil rights denied to gay and lesbian Americans. These protests, which continued through 1969, are widely recognized as some of the first organized public demonstrations for equality in the United States and helped lay the groundwork for later activism.

Within Philadelphia, LGBTQ+ residents also staged actions such as sit-ins at Dewey’s Restaurant after staff harassed and refused service to gender-nonconforming customers, further cementing the city’s reputation as a site of early queer resistance. During the 1970s and 1980s, advocates across the country pursued incremental reforms, but legal recognition for same-sex couples remained extremely limited, and many legal strategies stalled in legislatures and courts.

The Federal Landscape and DOMA

By the mid 1990s, anxiety about potential legal recognition of same-sex unions prompted a federal backlash. In 1996, in response to a Hawaii Supreme Court decision in Baehr v. Lewin that suggested same-sex marriage might be constitutionally required there, Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). DOMA defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman in the federal level and allowed states to refuse recognition of same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions.

In 1996, Pennsylvania enacted a statutory ban on same-sex marriage by defining marriage in its domestic relations code as a union between one man and one woman, a provision that would remain formally in state law until it was effectively nullified by later court decisions.

Despite these setbacks, public opinion began to shift. By the early 2000s, several states adopted civil unions or domestic partnership systems that offered partial recognition of same-sex relationships, and a growing number of lawsuits challenged state-level marriage bans on constitutional grounds.

The Road to Marriage Equality

A major turning point came in 2003 and 2004, when the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decided Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, holding that denying marriage licenses to same-sex couples violated the state constitution. Massachusetts began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2004, becoming the first state to legalize same-sex marriage and demonstrating that marriage equality was politically and legally viable within the United States.

Momentum continued to build over the next decade, although progress remained uneven and often faced sharp political resistance, ballot measures, and court challenges. In 2013, another critical shift occurred when the U.S. Supreme Court decided United States v. Windsor, striking down key provisions of DOMA that denied federal recognition to legally married same-sex couples. The Court’s ruling required the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages valid under state law and provided powerful doctrinal support for challenges to state marriage bans.

Within two years of Windsor, dozens of federal and state court decisions concluded that state-level bans on same-sex marriage violated the Fourteenth Amendment, creating a rapidly expanding patchwork of marriage equality across most of the country. The issue returned to the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges, and on June 26, 2015, the Court held that same-sex couples have a fundamental right to marry, requiring every state to both license and recognize such marriages. By that point, more than 70 percent of states and the District of Columbia already recognized same-sex marriages, and Obergefell unified the legal landscape nationwide.

Pennsylvania’s Pivotal Role

Pennsylvania occupied a distinctive place in this history. Unlike some states that moved through explicit legislative reforms, Pennsylvania’s route to marriage equality was shaped by a federal constitutional challenge to its decades-old statutory ban. For years, the Commonwealth maintained language in its domestic relations law that restricted marriage to one man and one woman, even as public attitudes and court rulings elsewhere increasingly undermined such bans.

In July 2013, shortly after Windsor, the ACLU, ACLU of Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia-based law firm Hangley, Aronchick, Segal, Pudlin and Schiller filed Whitewood v. Wolf, the first federal lawsuit after Windsor to challenge a state’s same-sex marriage ban. The plaintiffs included several same-sex couples and a widow who either wished to marry in Pennsylvania or sought recognition of marriages performed in other states.

On May 20, 2014, Federal District Judge John E. Jones III ruled in Whitewood v. Wolf that ban on same-sex marriage violated the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. The decision took effect immediately to allow same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses across the Commonwealth without delay.

What made this ruling especially significant was the state’s response. The following day, Governor Tom Corbett announced that his administration would not appeal the decision, which meant the ruling became final and uncontested. Pennsylvania thereby became the nineteenth state to legalize same-sex marriage and the last state in the Northeastern United States to do so, adding substantial legal and symbolic momentum to the national movement against state marriage bans.

Philadelphia: A City at the Forefront

Long before marriage equality became law in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia had earned a reputation as one of the country’s most influential centers of LGBTQ+ activism. The Annual Reminder protests at Independence Hall, led in part by Barbara Gittings from 1965 to 1969, explicitly connected LGBTQ+ rights to the broader American civil rights tradition and to the nation’s founding ideals. These events helped frame LGBTQ+ equality as a question of constitutional rights, a framing that would later resonate in litigation such as Windsor, Whitewood, and Obergefell.

Over the following decades, Philadelphia developed robust LGBTQ+ community institutions, advocacy organizations, and cultural infrastructure, including local media such as the Philadelphia Gay News, which chronicled and amplified the struggle for equality. The city often adopted local policies protecting LGBTQ+ residents earlier than many other jurisdictions, reinforcing its status as a relatively welcoming place for the community.

In the immediate run-up to Whitewood, Philadelphia officials again pushed the boundaries of existing law. Under Mayor Michael Nutter, the city took steps to support same-sex couples to began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples even before the statewide ban was formally struck down, which drew national attention to Pennsylvania’s restrictive laws. After Judge Jones’s ruling, Philadelphia quickly became a focal point for celebration, as thousands of couples sought marriage licenses at City Hall and throughout the city, turning long-awaited legal recognition into very visible public moments.

The Legacy of Marriage Equality

Marriage equality changed far more than access to a marriage license. By confirming that same-sex couples have the same right to marry as different-sex couples, Obergefell ensured equal access to a wide range of legal benefits and protections, including taxation status, inheritance rules, health insurance and medical decision-making, immigration sponsorship, Social Security benefits, and parental rights. For many families, this recognition translated directly into economic security and legal clarity that had previously been denied.

Pennsylvania and Philadelphia remain important symbols of this broader struggle. Philadelphia’s early activism helped define the national LGBTQ+ movement and tied it to American democratic ideals, while Pennsylvania’s 2014 federal court victory in Whitewood v. Wolf added crucial legal momentum that helped pave the way for Obergefell the following year. The city’s and state’s experiences illustrate how local legal actions and political decisions can shape national constitutional outcomes.

The story did not end with Obergefell. In 2022, concerns that the Supreme Court might reconsider its marriage precedents after overturning Roe v. Wade prompted Congress to pass the HR 8404 - Respect for Marriage Act, which President Biden signed on December 13, 2022. The law repealed DOMA in the federal code and requires federal and state recognition of valid same-sex and interracial marriages performed in any state, reinforcing the durability of marriage equality nationwide.

Within Pennsylvania, efforts have continued to align state statutes with constitutional realities. In July 2024, the Pennsylvania House passed HB 2269, a marriage equality bill that sought to remove the obsolete statutory ban from state law and formally codify marriage equality at the state level, marking the first time such legislation had cleared a chamber of the General Assembly. This step reflects ongoing work to ensure that state law matches the lived experience of residents and the constitutional rights affirmed by federal courts.

Today, the history of marriage equality stands as one of the most significant civil rights achievements of the twenty-first century. The victories achieved in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia demonstrate how local activism, legal strategy, and political leadership can interact over decades to transform national law and expand the promise of equal protection under the law for all Americans. The movement’s trajectory, from early protests at Independence Hall to nationwide marriage equality, underscores the power of persistence, visibility, and the conviction that every person deserves equal dignity under the law.

Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ heritage runs deep. The city is home to the Gayborhood, a neighborhood adorned with rainbow crosswalks, street signs, small businesses and community services. Historical moments like the Dewey’s Sit-Ins and the Annual Reminder demonstrations helped shape the national conversation about queer rights, and that legacy of visibility extends naturally into sports. It is no coincidence that Philadelphia has developed one of the richest ecosystems of LGBTQ+ athletic life in the country.

⚾ The Phillies: Baseball and Brotherhood

The Philadelphia Phillies have made their annual Pride Night one of their key events during the summer calendar in June. Every year, it draws thousands of fans, LGBTQ+ community members, and allies together for what has become one of the most anticipated themed nights in baseball.

🏒 The Flyers: Hockey with a Rainbow

The Philadelphia Flyers have been among the most consistent advocates for LGBTQ+ inclusion in Philadelphia’s professional sports landscape. The evening featured rainbow-themed arena LEDs, a pregame Flyers Pride Fest spotlighting local LGBTQ+ small businesses, artists, and community groups, a specialty Pride cocktail, glitter stations, and a photo booth. The Flyers also provided complimentary tickets to local nonprofits to ensure members of the LGBTQ+ community could attend regardless of financial means.

🏀 The 76ers and the WNBA Wave

The 76ers and the city’s WNBA community have also been part of the Pride celebration. A special WNBA Pride watch party was organized at Stir Lounge, drawing fans to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride in the W. A reflection of the WNBA’s historically strong ties to the queer community and its enthusiastic fan base in Philadelphia.

The Amateur Leagues: Where Community Is the Championship

🏈 Stonewall Sports Philadelphia

Stonewall Sports – Philadelphia is a nonprofit that provides recreational sports leagues to the city’s LGBTQ+ community and its allies. With offerings spanning kickball, dodgeball, bowling, volleyball, bocce, and yoga, Stonewall focuses equally on athletic competition and social connection. In 2023, Philadelphia was selected to host the largest-ever Stonewall Sports National Tournament, held over the July 14 weekend at venues across the city. With 26 chapters nationwide, the Philadelphia chapter stands as one of the most active in the country with Sunday kickball games at Marconi Plaza in South Philadelphia being a hallmark of the league’s community spirit.

🎱 OutLoud Sports Philadelphia

OutLoud Sports (OLS) brings a no-tryouts-required ethos to queer athletics in Philadelphia. The league welcomes players of all skill levels into rotating seasonal offerings that include soccer, basketball, kickball, cornhole, and billiards. The Philadelphia chapter exemplifies the city’s philosophy that competitive sport and inclusive community are not mutually exclusive.

🥎 City of Brotherly Love Softball League

Perhaps no organization better represents the long arc of LGBTQ+ sports in Philadelphia than the City of Brotherly Love Softball League (CBLSL). Founded in 1983 by a group of gay men who had previously worked together in the Gay Activists Alliance. The league was born out of necessity to create a space free of homophobia, intimidation, and stereotyping at a time when the AIDS crisis was devastating communities. Forty years later, it has grown into the city’s largest LGBTQ+ sports league, with over 650 participants and 32 teams. Games are held Sundays at the Dairy and Edgely Fields in Fairmount Park. The league offers both Recreational and Competitive divisions, as well as an all-gender Open division and a Women’s Plus Division for women, nonbinary, trans, and gender-nonconforming players since the 1990s.

🏉 Philadelphia Gryphons Rugby Football Club

The Philadelphia Gryphons RFC, founded in 2003 as the city’s first gay men’s rugby club has evolved into a fully gender-inclusive team. The Gryphons are a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union and International Gay Rugby. They hold practices Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at Lanier Playground (29th & Tasker) and are open to all skill levels. Before each competitive season, the team runs a Rugby 101 onboarding clinic to welcome new players. Their annual Colonial Cup, held in Fairmount Park, draws gay-friendly rugby clubs from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, New England, New York City, and Washington, DC.

⚽ Philadelphia Falcons Soccer Club

The Philadelphia Falcons Soccer Club have been flying the queer flag on the soccer pitch since 1989, when a small group of LGBTQ+ players began gathering on South Philly softball fields. Over the decades, the club grew large enough to enter competitive leagues, out-of-state tournaments, and added women’s teams in 1998. Today, the Falcons boast over 500 members playing across men’s, women’s, and nonbinary teams.

Philadelphia’s queer sports ecosystem extends even further. Queer Volleyball Philly hosts casual outdoor meetups twice monthly at Clark Park and Blue Bell Park. Philly Queer Hoopers runs weekly LGBTQ+ basketball at Palumbo Recreation Center. Pickle Me Queer has made pickleball accessible to the queer community out of Kingsessing Recreation Center. The Greater Philadelphia Flag Football League, founded in 2009 and affiliated with the National Gay Flag Football League, runs fall and spring seasons and fields two travel teams. And Philly Cheer Elite, founded in 2019, uses cheerleading as a vehicle to raise funds for LGBTQ+ organizations across the city.

Why It All Matters

Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ sports scene is more than a collection of leagues and Pride nights, it is a living expression of the city’s identity. For the gay baseball players who gathered in 1983 amid a crisis that was stealing their community, a softball game was an act of resistance. For a transgender teenager lacing up rugby cleats for the first time with the Gryphons on a Tuesday night practice is an act of belonging. And for the thousands of fans who fill Citizens Bank Park or Xfinity Mobile Arena for Pride nights, it is a declaration that sport, like love, should have no barriers. In the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection, that message has always resonated loudly in every color of the rainbow.

About 10 years ago, I came to NOLA for an Alternative Spring Break to provide community services, taught a Junior Achievement class, and repainted houses for the Hurricane Katrina victims rather than the traditional Spring Break parties. 10 years later, I came back to the city to revisit the recoveries and the differences it achieved.

NOLA was founded by the French in 1718, shaped by the Spanish, transformed by the largest population of free Black people of any antebellum American city, and seasoned by Caribbean, African, and Native American influences that never fully separated. The Gayborhood

The Gayborhood occupies roughly twelve blocks in the Washington Square West section of Center City, running from Broad Street to 11th Street between Chestnut and Pine. Its heart is the intersection of 13th and Locust, marked by rainbow-painted crosswalks and the density of bars, restaurants, bookstores, and community institutions that have made this one of the most recognized and walkable LGBTQ neighborhoods in the country. The neighborhood also holds the William Way LGBT Community Center on Spruce Street, one of the oldest and most active LGBTQ community centers in the country, and Philly AIDS Thrift @Giovanni’s Room, which operates continuously as the oldest LGBTQ-focused bookstore in the United States.

The Distinguish Five Pillars

The Little Gay Pub is one of the most anticipated recent additions to the Gayborhood, opening in May 2025 at 102 S 13th Street. Before expanding to Philadelphia, the original location debuted in March 2023 in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC. The Philadelphia space was furnished with decor that reflects the city's queer history. The bar has earned a devoted following for its intentionally over-the-top interior and its Instagram-famous bathrooms.

Knock Restaurant and Bar has been a fixture at the corner of 12th and Locust Streets on 225 S 12th Street since 2007. The drink menu leans into cocktails like Espresso and Almond Joy Martinis. Entertainment runs most nights: show tunes on Sundays and drag karaoke on Wednesdays hosted by Iris Spectre. Sidewalk dining on Locust Street is available in warmer months.

Tavern on Camac sits on 243 S Camac Street, a narrow brick-paved alley between Locust and Pine Street. It has functioned as a corridor of queer social life since at least the Prohibition era, when the building itself operated as a speakeasy. The venue reopened under its current name in the early 2000s and has since built a reputation around its basement restaurant, first-floor piano bar, and second-floor dance floor, where singalongs are nightly occurrences and the crowd tends to be as enthusiastic as it is mixed. It is a destination for both first-timers and regulars.

U Bar at 1220 Locust Street functions as the neighborhood’s neighborhood bar, the place where the Gayborhood’s own residents drink on an ordinary Tuesday with no particular agenda. It has the floor-to-ceiling windows, and a great selection of craft and European beers on tap alongside an all-day brunch menu. The vibe is genuinely local in a way that is easy to appreciate and harder to manufacture. It is a good place to start the night before the rest of the block gets going.

254 occupies three floors on 254 S 12th Street. The ground floor operates as a sports bar with one pool table, multiple TVs, and a bar in the center. The second floor shifts into a proper dance club with a DJ setup and three additional pool tables in the back. The three floor and a partially covered roof deck makes it one of the more versatile venues in the neighborhood regardless of the season.

The Deeper Cuts

The Bike Stop is the Gayborhood’s leather and bear bar, and it has been exactly that for long enough that it qualifies as a Philadelphia institution in its own right. The three-story building just off Spruce Street has operated in one form or another since after World War II, including a stint as a lesbian bar and a drag club, before settling into its current character. The crowd is specific, the vibe is unpretentious, and the bar does not try to be anything other than what it is.

Bar X on 255 S Camac Street occupies the corner spot that once housed the Venture Inn, one of the Gayborhood’s oldest bars.

Stir Lounge on 1705 Chancellor Street sits just west of the Gayborhood proper, in the quieter residential streets between the Gayborhood and Rittenhouse Square. It is a lesbian-owned cocktail bar with a sophisticated, low-lit atmosphere, craft drinks, and music kept at a volume that allows for actual conversation. The crowd is mixed but reliably queer-leaning and especially welcoming for queer women.

What’s New

Val’s Lesbian Bar opened in March 2026 at 605 South 3rd Street in Queen Village, becoming the first bar in Philadelphia to identify specifically as a lesbian bar since the Toasted Walnut closed in 2021. It is one of fewer than forty lesbian bars operating anywhere in the United States. The South Street location places it slightly outside the traditional Gayborhood geography, in a Queen Village corridor that is beginning to feel like a second queer hub.

Marsha’s opened in September 2025 as a queer women’s sports bar. It has quickly become a staple of the growing South Philly queer scene. Together with Val’s Lesbian Bar, the two venues have given queer women in Philadelphia a nightlife presence that has been notable by its absence for years, and the community response has been strong enough that the South Philly stretch is now drawing visitors who might otherwise have stayed in the Gayborhood for the entire evening.

Beyond The “Hood”

Bob and Barbara’s is located on 1509 South Street, sits outside the Gayborhood proper and operates as one of those bars that earns its reputation entirely by doing one or two things consistently well. Thursday drag shows draw a loyal crowd, and the venue’s three-dollar citywide special, a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon paired with a shot of Jim Beam, has become something of a Philadelphia institution that extends well beyond the LGBTQ community.

Philadelphia’s queer nightlife in 2026 is in a more interesting place than it has been in years. With new venues opening in South Philly, the city investing in LGBTQ-specific visitor center for the first time with the opening of the Philly Pride Visitor Center on 1139 Locust Street. The Gayborhood has never been just a bar district, but it remains one of the most concentrated and walkable expressions of LGBTQ community life in any American city.

Founded in 1158 on the banks of the Isar River, Munich grew from a small monastic settlement into the proud capital of Bavaria, a kingdom that resisted absorption into a unified Germany until the last possible moment and never entirely let go of its distinct identity. That independence of spirit is still present. Munich feels Bavarian before it feels German, a distinction locals will make for you if you forget to make it yourself.

The city Penn laid out in a tidy grid between the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers grew quickly into one of the most important cities in the English-speaking world. By the mid-eighteenth century, Philadelphia was the largest city in the American colonies, a center of commerce, printing, medicine, and radical political thought. The First Continental Congress convened here in 1774. The Declaration of Independence was debated and signed here in 1776. The Constitution was drafted here in 1787. For a decade between 1790 and 1800, Philadelphia served as the capital of the new republic.

The nineteenth century brought industrialization and waves of immigration. Irish, Italian, Eastern European Jewish, and later, during the Great Migration, hundreds of thousands of Black Americans from the rural South seeking work and a measure of freedom in the urban North. Philadelphia absorbed them all, imperfectly and often violently, as American cities did. Neighborhoods stratified along lines of race and ethnicity. The political machine that ran City Hall for much of the early twentieth century was famously corrupt. And yet the city endured, producing writers and painters and musicians, building hospitals and universities, remaining stubbornly, insistently itself.

By the mid-twentieth century, Philadelphia was a city in transition. Its manufacturing base was eroding. White flight to the suburbs hollowed out neighborhoods. A reform movement in the 1950s began to modernize city government, and mayors like Joseph Clark and Richardson Dilworth laid the groundwork for a more progressive civic culture.

Before Stonewall: The Annual Reminder

The story of LGBTQ rights in America is often told as a story that begins with a hot night in Greenwich Village in June 1969, when patrons of the Stonewall Inn finally fought back against a police raid. That story is true and important. But the movement that made Stonewall possible had already been quietly organizing for years, and Philadelphia was one of its most significant proving grounds.

On July 4, 1965, a small group of men and women walked in a picket line in front of Independence Hall. They dressed conservatively, the men in suits and ties, the women in skirts, because their organizers understood that legibility mattered, that respectability in the public eye was a tool, however uncomfortable that fact might be. They called their demonstration the Annual Reminder, and their message was direct: gay and lesbian Americans were citizens too, and they lacked the civil rights the nation had promised its people.

The Annual Reminder was organized under the auspices of the Eastern Regional Council of Homophile Organizations. In its early years, bore the particular imprint of Barbara Gittings, one of the most consequential and underappreciated figures in American civil rights history. Gittings had co-founded the New York chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis, the country’s first lesbian civil and political organization in 1958. She had edited the organization’s newsletter, The Ladder, giving it a sharper political edge. And she had moved to Philadelphia, where she became the organizational heart of the Annual Reminder protests.

For five consecutive years, from 1965 through 1969, demonstrators returned to Independence Hall every Fourth of July. The symbolism was deliberate and pointed. Here was the birthplace of American democracy, the very ground where the founders had declared that all men were created equal. The protesters were asking a simple question: did that include them? They picketed peacefully. They engaged passersby. They were often jeered. They kept coming back.

Dewey’s and the Sit-In That History Forgot

The Annual Reminders were not the only form of activism taking shape in Philadelphia during this period. In April 1965, weeks before the first Independence Hall protest, a sit-in occurred at Dewey’s, a lunch counter restaurant on the corner of 17th and Chancellor Streets that had been refusing service to gay customers and gender-nonconforming young people it deemed undesirable. Activists with the Janus Society, a local homophile organization, organized sit-in protests on two consecutive Saturdays, drawing on the direct-action model that civil rights demonstrators had been using across the South to challenge segregated lunch counters.

More than 150 people were turned away from service during those demonstrations. Several were arrested, but the tactic worked. Dewey’s ultimately agreed to stop its discriminatory service policy. It was one of the first gay sit-ins in American history, and it happened quietly, without national coverage, in a city that was already teaching itself how to push back.

The Turn: After Stonewall

When the Stonewall uprising happened in late June 1969, the Annual Reminder that followed on July 4th of that year felt different. The demonstration proceeded as planned, but something had shifted in the air. At least two participants, defying the long-standing protocol of restrained comportment, held hands while picketing.

That July 1969 demonstration was the last Annual Reminder. Barbara Gittings, Craig Rodwell of New York, and other organizers agreed to redirect their energy toward a larger national action. The following year, on the first anniversary of Stonewall, New York hosted the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, the direct ancestor of every Pride parade that has taken place anywhere in the world since. Philadelphia held its own march that same year. The language had changed. The tactics had changed. The movement was no longer asking politely at the door.

The 1970s saw Philadelphia’s gay and lesbian community begin to build the institutions that would sustain it. The William Way LGBT Community Center was founded in 1975, taking its name from a community advocate, and would eventually become one of the oldest continuously operating LGBTQ centers in the country. Giovanni’s Room, a bookstore specializing in LGBTQ titles, opened in 1973 on 12th Street and became not just a place to buy books but a community anchor, a gathering point, a kind of library of the self for gay and lesbian Philadelphians who had often grown up without access to any literature that reflected their lives back at them.

The neighborhood around 12th and Locust Streets, in the larger area known as Washington Square West, was quietly becoming what people would eventually call the Gayborhood. Bars, organizations, and housing drew a community into a geographic center, and the center began to define itself with increasing confidence.

The Weight of the HIV/AIDS Epidemic

The 1980s arrived in Philadelphia the way they arrived everywhere: with rumors, then fear, then grief at a scale the community had not known before. AIDS moved through the gay neighborhoods of American cities like a tide that would not recede, and Philadelphia was not spared.

The city’s response was, like the epidemic itself, layered and uneven. The municipal government was slow. The medical establishment was often indifferent. The ACT UP Philadelphia, was founded in 1988 and brought the movement’s signature combination of outrage and sophistication to demonstrations, die-ins, and confrontations with pharmaceutical companies and government officials. The chapter’s members understood that visibility was survival, that silence was complicity, and that the urgency of the moment required tactics that made comfortable people uncomfortable.

Philadelphia FIGHT, the health organization founded in 1990, grew out of the community’s need for practical medical support in the absence of adequate government response. It eventually became one of the leading community-based HIV/AIDS service organizations in the country, providing treatment, housing support, and advocacy for people living with HIV regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. The Mazzoni Center, which had been providing healthcare to the LGBTQ community since the 1970s, expanded its services to meet the catastrophic need of the epidemic years.

What the AIDS crisis did to Philadelphia’s LGBTQ community was immeasurable in its loss. It also, in the way of great collective suffering, drew people together and politicized a generation. People who had been content to exist quietly became organizers. People who had organized locally became national figures. The epidemic forced the movement to become fluent in the language of medicine, policy, insurance, and power.

Building the Gayborhood

By the 1990s, the neighborhood around 12th and Locust had become a recognized geography. The city of Philadelphia eventually made this official in a way that few cities had done: rainbow-painted crosswalks appeared on 12th and 13th Streets between Walnut and Spruce, the first of their kind in the country. Street signs bearing the word “Gayborhood” in rainbow colors were installed at key intersections. These were symbolic gestures, but symbols matter; they communicate belonging, and they tell newcomers, including young people arriving in the city for the first time, that they are seen.

The city’s legal framework was catching up as well. Philadelphia added sexual orientation to its anti-discrimination ordinance in 1982, well ahead of any state or federal protection. Gender identity and expression were added to that protection in 2002. The city’s Commission on Human Relations had jurisdiction over discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations, which meant that Philadelphia’s LGBTQ residents had legal recourse that their counterparts in most of the country did not.

A New Flag and an Old Argument

In June 2017, Philadelphia unveiled a modified Pride flag that added black and brown horizontal stripes to the traditional six-color rainbow. The redesign came from Tierney, a Philadelphia advertising agency, in partnership with the city’s Office of LGBT Affairs, and it was intended to center LGBTQ people of color within the broader movement’s visual identity.

The new flag generated significant discussion, some of it uncomfortable, about race and belonging within LGBTQ spaces and organizations. That discomfort was part of the point. The rainbow flag had been created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker to represent the full diversity of the gay and lesbian community. However, the communities most represented in the bars and organizations of many gayborhoods, including Philadelphia’s were overwhelmingly white. The added stripes were a public acknowledgment that this had been a failure of inclusion, and that the city was choosing, at least symbolically, to do better.

Philadelphia's decision rippled outward. The redesigned flag was adopted and modified further, eventually contributing to the broader "Progress Pride Flag" that added transgender colors and a chevron design, and which has become common in many LGBTQ spaces since. A city-level design decision became part of the movement's evolving iconography.

Marriage, Recognition, and the Road to Today

Pennsylvania’s ban on same-sex marriage fell on May 20, 2014, when U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III ruled it unconstitutional. The state’s attorney general, Kathleen Kane, had already announced she would not defend the ban in court. Governor Tom Corbett, a Republican who opposed same-sex marriage, chose not to appeal the ruling. Marriage licenses began being issued to same-sex couples that same day. In Philadelphia, couples who had in some cases waited decades lined the steps of City Hall.

The Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges decision in June 2015 established marriage equality nationwide. The community that had picketed at Independence Hall in suits and skirts fifty years earlier, that had buried its friends during the epidemic, that had organized and argued and built institutions in the gaps left by indifferent government, had lived to see a transformation that would have seemed impossible to the demonstrators of 1965.

Today, the William Way Community Center continues to operate at 1315 Spruce Street, offering social and support services, archival resources, and community programming. The Mazzoni Center provides comprehensive health care. New organizations have emerged to serve transgender youth, LGBTQ seniors, and communities of color within the broader LGBTQ umbrella. The Annual Reminder is commemorated each year. A historical marker on the south side of Independence Hall notes the significance of what happened in that spot.

The Gayborhood has changed, as neighborhoods do. Some of the bars have closed. The physical center of LGBTQ social life in Philadelphia has become more diffuse as legal protections have made it less necessary, and in some ways less urgent, to cluster in a single defended geography. The original Giovanni’s Room that was opened in 1973 closed its doors in 2014 after more than four decades of service. But luckily, it was reopened as a branch of the Philly AIDS Thrift shortly after.

What Philadelphia Carries

Philadelphia is not a perfect city. It is a city with deep poverty, persistent racial inequity, and a political culture that remains complicated by its history. But it is a city that held a protest at the foot of Independence Hall, year after year, when that kind of protest required genuine courage. It is a city that changed the visual language of Pride. It carries all of this alongside its cheesesteaks, the Gritty & Phanatic duo and its justifiably legendary impatience with outsiders who do not understand what it is.

Traveling to Philadelphia with any real curiosity is to understand that the history of LGBTQ liberation in America is not only a New York, or a San Francisco story. Some of the most consequential groundwork was laid here, quietly and persistently, by people who believed that if this city could not deliver on its founding promise of brotherly love, it could at least be shamed into trying harder.

The city is still trying. That may be the most Philadelphia thing about it.

For families, Las Vegas during the holidays is a different kind of trip. The Strip transforms into one of the largest New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world, with fireworks launched simultaneously from multiple resort rooftops lighting up the desert sky in a display that needs no ticket or reservation.

  • Construction of the Hoover Dam began in 1931 during the depths of the Great Depression, and it became one of the most ambitious engineering projects the United States had ever attempted. Thousands of workers descended on the Black Canyon of the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona, working in brutal desert heat to divert the river, pour millions of cubic yards of concrete, and raise a wall of art deco masonry 726 feet high. Old San Juan is built on cobblestones made from adoquines, blue-tinged slag bricks brought over as ballast in the hulls of Spanish ships, worn smooth by five hundred years of foot traffic. Walk them long enough and the city reveals itself in layers: colonial fortresses that guard the Atlantic, pastel facades the color of guava and saffron, Baroque churches that have outlasted empires, and balconies draped in bougainvillea spilling over streets barely wide enough for two people to pass.

Founded in 1521, San Juan is the second-oldest European-established city in the Americas. Its historic core in a 7-block-wide peninsula at the mouth of San Juan Bay. It remained one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial districts in the entire Western Hemisphere. The fortresses of El Morro and San Cristóbal, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, bookend the city with sheer masonry walls that rise directly from the sea, reminding visitors that this was once the most strategically important port in the New World.

  • Castillo San Felipe del Morro (aka El Morro) is one of the most formidable examples of Spanish military engineering in the Americas. Construction began in 1539, and over the following 200 years the Spanish Crown built it upward and outward into a six-level citadel of limestone walls up to 18 feet thick, rising 140 feet above the sea. It was designed to be, and largely was, impregnable. It repelled British naval attacks led by Sir Francis Drake in 1595 and the Earl of Cumberland in 1598, and held off the Dutch in 1625.

  • Today El Morro is part of the San Juan National Historic Site, jointly administered with the nearby Castillo San Cristóbal and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The grounds draw visitors into a landscape of sweeping ramparts, sentry boxes called garitas that have become the enduring symbol of Puerto Rico, and vast green esplanades where kites fly against the Caribbean sky. It is a small, joyful contrast to the weight of history all around.

  • In the center of Old San Juan, just steps from the gates of El Morro, stands one of the largest buildings ever constructed by the Spanish in the Americas.

  • The Cuartel de Ballajá was built between 1854 and 1864 to house Spanish infantry troops and their families, a self-contained military world with kitchens, jails, stables, and quarters for up to 1,000 soldiers all organized around a grand interior courtyard. It was the last major public building the Spanish Crown erected in Puerto Rico, completed just decades before the island changed hands following the Spanish-American War of 1898.

  • After more than a century of shifting uses, including a period as a U.S. Army facility, the building has found a purpose that suits its scale and grandeur. Today it is home to the Museo de las Américas, a permanent collection dedicated to the cultural heritage of the peoples of the Americas, from pre-Columbian traditions to the African diaspora to the folk art and craft of the Caribbean. Rotating exhibitions fill its high-ceilinged galleries throughout the year.

  • The courtyard at the center of it all remains one of the finest public spaces in Old San Juan, shaded and unhurried, framed by three stories of arched Spanish colonial stonework. It is the kind of place that rewards a long sit and no particular agenda.

  • Tucked at the edge of the Plaza del Quinto Centenario, Fuente Raíces is one of Old San Juan's quieter rewards.

  • The fountain's sculptural forms draw from Taíno and African iconography, weaving together the indigenous and ancestral roots that run beneath Puerto Rican identity. It sits in conversation with the towering Totem Telúrico nearby, part of a plaza built in 1992 to mark 500 years of history on the island.

  • For centuries, this was how you entered the city. The Puerta de San Juan, one of the few surviving gates in the old city wall, was the primary entry point for Spanish soldiers, clergy, and settlers arriving from the sea.

  • The Capilla del Santo Cristo de la Salud dates to 1753, built according to legend at the site where a horseman miraculously survived a fatal plunge over the city wall during a festival race. The tiny chapel, rarely larger than a single room, has been a place of quiet devotion ever since. Next to it, Parque de las Palomas draws locals and visitors alike, the pigeons so accustomed to company they will land on your shoulders without hesitation.

• Colorful buildings of Old San Juan

  • No photograph quite prepares you for it. Walking the streets of Old San Juan, the buildings announce themselves in shades of ochre, cobalt, terracotta, mint, and rose, each facade a distinct note in a chorus that runs the length of every block.

  • The tradition traces back to Spanish colonial practice, when lime-based paints in natural pigments were applied to masonry walls to protect against the Caribbean climate. Over generations the palette deepened into something more deliberate, a visual identity as recognized as the blue cobblestones underfoot.

  • Today the colors are maintained with care and pride. No two buildings match, and somehow the whole street does.
